Statistics Canada’s 2016 Census confirms the impact of immigrants across all Canadian provinces. Manitoba’s 5.8% growth rate was due mostly to international immigration. While skilled immigrants are expected to contribute to the social and economic fabric of their new home, many experience real challenges entering the workforce. The 2016 immigration research project conducted by the Rural Development Institute (RDI) at Brandon University found many immigrants encounter two hurdles: credential recognition and language training.
The workshop panelists will provide differing perspectives on immigrants, including: personal reflections on the immigration experience; an overview of the RDI immigration project; and experiences working with immigrants, such as outlining their organization’s services for immigrants, training opportunities provided by post-secondary institutions, and applying Recognizing Prior Learning (RPL) principles and practices for immigrants by service providers. The workshop activities will focus on identifying gaps in addressing immigrants’ needs, sharing insights and practises to address these challenges, and establishing networks among regional stakeholders.
- Identify challenges immigrants (refugees) encounter entering the workforce – especially those wishing to utilize their foreign training and credentials and prior work experience
- Identify services providers in the MB Westman region involved in assessing / recognizing training and credentials (regulatory bodies, etc.)
- Learn to apply RPL principles and practise in recognizing learning and employment skills
- Establish networks and contacts (post-secondary, regulatory bodies, settlement service providers)
